Charterhouse & Long Wood 28/4/15 Redstart, Cranes and Bluebells

A visit to Charterhouse on the Mendips in the hope of finding the Green Hairstreak amongst other things.  It was sunny enough but quite Cold and extremely windy! Our walk took us to the wood at Charterhouse and back through Ubley Warren and through Velvet Bottom to Long Wood and back.
Just a few steps from where we parked we spotted a male and female Redstart on the Hawthorn. Brilliant to see their return. Also in this area a few Wheatear hopped from tuft to tuft. Approaching the wood a Cuckoo started calling its familiar song and as I looked up to the sky for signs of the sun two Cranes flew overhead - did not expect to see them over the Mendips!
No sign of any Green Hairstreaks as we walked through Ubley Warren but it was blowing a gale!
There is a field above Long Wood that is full of Cuckoo Flower, Celandines and Dandelions and it was here that we saw a few Orange Tips.
Long Wood itself is probably one of the best Bluebell Woods I have seen. Probably another week before they are at their peak but still breathtaking. Some lovely Early purple Orchids to be found in the wood as well as the area around Black Rock. A beautiful area of the Mendips.
